It is still possible to build a better future together for everyone and to live in perfect harmony in a healthy and preserved environment. In this sense, it is essential to start by teaching and educating young people about eco-citizen behavior for the defense, protection and preservation of the environment.
In order to discover the different initiatives of young migrants in the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity, MeineWelt e.V. and PLACE for Africa initiated an international exchange workshop gathering young people from Germany, Togo, Cameroon, Gambia and Cameroon. Focusing on the involvement of migrants in the management of ecosystems and biodiversity, it was a space for exchange, networking and promotion of young migrants’ initiatives for the preservation of biodiversity in their host countries. Our guest GAYE ABLIE, connected from Gambia, was able to take us on a journey between the realities of the migrants’ countries of origin and how they manage to transfer knowledge from their countries of origin to their host countries for active participation in the protection of the ecosystem and biodiversity. In his presentation, he recalled the importance of migrants’ contribution to the proper management of household waste and their participation in the life of their community in the host country for better preservation of biodiversity.
In his closing remarks, our guest did not fail to stress that youth is the present and the future of this world. The full participation of young people in the construction of a viable and liveable world for the generations that will follow us is therefore not a choice, but an imperative in which we must all take part.
This initiative is part of the Migration meet Sustainable Development Project which aims to promote the contribution of migrants to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. Through this project, 17 events are organised on the 17 sustainable development goals in the form of round tables, workshops, digital campaigns, etc. The project is supported by DSEE (DEUTSCHE STIFTUNG FÜR ENGAGEMENT UND EHRENAMT) to strengthen the participation of people with a migration background in the cities of Mannheim, Lampertheim and Worms.
